Gambles of Southwest
The Gamble history can be traced back to Cork County, Ireland from where James Gamble (1759) emigrated to Miramichi, New Brunswick where his six children were born. These children all moved to PEI, mainly the area around Tryon. A son, Hugh (1795-1862), married Mary Ann MacGregor and had eleven children, one of whom was Thomas (1832). In 1866, Thomas married Margaret Forbes, daughter or Alexander Forbes and Flora Cameron, and their son, William, (1867) moved to Southwest Lot 16 where he farmed and fished. William married (1) Flora MacKinnon; they had eight children. In 1944, he married (2)]essie Smith. William and his granddaughter, Rita Hansen, had a double wedding. Three weeks later, after helping push a neigh- bour’s car from the mud, William suffered a heart attack and died. Flora, William, andjessie are all buried in the Lot 16 United Church Cemetery.
William’s son,_]ohn, married Louisa Baglole, daughter of William and Laura (see Baglole History). They lived in Southwest and had eight children: Linus, Doris, Margaret, Hilda, Ernest, Major, Erma, and Victor. Louisa operated a small store in their home.
Linus Gamble loved the water and was a successful lob- ster fisherman; he married Hazel Fitzgerald from Murray Road. She was the daughter of William and Bridget (Stone) from Lot 11, Freeland. They had a family of six, four of whom remained in Lot 16: LeRoy (Karen), Catherine (Roy Parks), Victor (Dorothy), and Terry (Darlene). Terry died in 1997 in a tragic drowning accident while fishing in Grand River.
Victor is a fourth—generation fisher. In 1966, he and Dorothy Ford were married in Ontario; they moved to Belmont in 1971. They have three daughters, Tracey, Natalie, and Angele. Tracey was married to Scott Laughlin; they have a daughter, Caraleise. Natalie married Daniel Arsenault and Angele is an ESL teacher in South Korea.
