William Hutchinson, Elizabeth’s son (1796), returned to PEI as a young man. While working at a salt store near the Miscouche Wharf, he met his future wife, Mary Ramsay, daughter of Malcolm. The couple must have been an inde- pendent pair as they were admonished several times by the session and by the minister and moderator of the Presbyterian Church, Rev. William MacGregor. On July 17, 1823, the Hutchinsons appeared before MacGregor for unruly conduct and resisting civil powers.4 Again in 1828, William H. was interrogated by MacGregor. He was asked if he was ashamed before God for lifting his hand against his fellow creature. William H. answered “No!” Interrogated likewise if he was ashamed before man, he again answered “No!” William H. was then advised to go home with some suitable texts of scrip— ture to read and when he thought better of his actions to return to the session.

The land William bought in Lot 16 extended from the eastern boundary line of the Central Lot 16 Community Pasture to the land now owned by Ralph Yeo. William was active in the community and was appointed constable for Lots 16 and 17 from 1832 until 1873. Upon his death, William’s farm was divided among three of his sons.

Mary and William had seven children, four of whom lived in Lot 16, Archibald, Donald, James and William. Archibald married Mary Stewart of Summerside; they moved to Pug- wash, N 5. Donald married Matilda Ramsay, and four of their twelve children remained in Lot 16: Hugh, Susan, James, and Patterson. Their farm was where Doug Miller now lives. James married Christian Ann (Christy) Ramsay from Port Hill and lived where Wilfred Hutchinson lived, adjacent to his brother, William. He and his wife are buried in Cavendish Presbyterian Cemetery as their daughters moved to that area. William, the third son, inherited land located between his brothers where the Wilfred MacLeod/Dorothy Hutchinson home was located.

Of Donald and Matilda’s children, Hugh married Sarah MacMaster and had seven children. They lived in Lot 17 and attended Lot 16 church. Their son, William, married Edith Hollingshead; they had four children:' Dorothy, Archie,
