Miller Family

The first Millers to live in Lot 16 were Alexander and Sarah. In 1876, they purchased the Thane Barlow proper- ty. They made their living through farming and custom grain threshing. They had seven children: Annie, William, Lillian, Percy, Henry, Edward, and Mac.

Will married Florence Gardiner (see Gardiner History). He was noted for his skill and ability in moving buildings; he moved many in Lot 16. Will was noted for his quick tem- per and his phrases coloured with oaths. Will and F10 had four children: one son, Willard, and three daughters, Alvira, Hazel, and Sadie. Willard moved to the US. and joined the US Navy. After WWII, he was killed while fitting pipes in an excavated ditch which caved in on him. Willard’s remains were returned to Lot 16 for burial. Alvira married Chalmers Hutchinson (see Hutchinson History). Hazel worked with the P E I Dept. of Social Services and built a home in Lot 16 to which she retired. Sadie moved to the United States.

Percy married Frances Brown. When the couple was first married, they lived in the house in which Glenford andjune MacLean lived for many years. While living in Southwest, Percy was a fisherman. Later he purchased part of the Hutchinson property, the farm that his grandson, Douglas, and great-grandson, Billy, operate. Percy was a prosperous farmer and a dedicated church and community worker. He supervised the Lot 16 United Church (Rose Hill) Cemetery for years and passed the position on to his son William (Bill). Percy and Frances had four children: Mabel (Ivan Dawson), Vernon (died as a child), Lilly (lVIilton Pickard), and William.

William (Bill) married Jean Curtis. W P. Miller was an elder of the Lot 16 United Church from 1953 until the early 1970s when the charge changed from lifetime elders to those elected for a period of three years. Bill and jean were very active in the community and the church. Bill followed in his
