the Monkleys became members of United Church. Charles Monkley passed away at a very early age leaving Belle to manage the farm and raise Ralph on her own. Belle was a tireless worker in church activities. She orga¬ nized the first Mission Band in her community and was instrumental in organizing Sunday School in the Methodist Church. She was an active choir member for many years. Ralph attended school in Southwest and, later, in Central. After helping on the family farm for many years, he became a partner in Monkley, Simmons, and MacFarlane Co . Ltd . and dealt in the potato industry until his retire¬ ment. In 1930, Ralph married Pearle Isabelle Simmons , daugh¬ ter of Frank and Myrtle Simmons, of Belmont. From this union, they were blessed with a family of eight daughters: Edith ( Frank McCully ), Elaine ( Ron Leard ), Arlene (Ban- nerman Craig), Dorothy ( Willis MacLean ), Anna ( Allison Noye ), Elizabeth (Vernon MacLean), and Sandra ( Claude Hutchinson ). A daughter, Catherine, died in 1970. Church and community played an important role in the Monkley home. Ralph and Pearle were very much involved with church work. Ralph served on several committees including Board of Stewards, trustees, and session. He was a life elder until the position was changed to a four-year term. He was church treasurer for over thirty years. Pearle was an active member in Ladies' Aid, UCW, and W.I. As the girls grew, they became involved in community groups as well - Baby Band , Mission Band , CGIT, and Young Peoples' Union. Ralph took a keen interest in the beauty of his province and served as judge for the Rural Beautification Society for some thirty-five years. He was presented with a Life Mem¬ bership in 1978, an honour he held with pride. As well, he served as a member of the Prince County Hospital Board for many years. He was Past Master of the Hiram & Lebanon Lodge. Although there are no Monkley family members living in Lot 16 today, three daughters remain affiliated with the United Church there.
