Thompson Family
In 1876, William Thompson, of Scottish descent, moved to Belmont from DeSable, PEI. He bought sixty acres of land from John Inman and moved a house across the ice from North St. Eleanor’s. His first wife was Miss Pempraise with whom he had three daughters, Margaret, Martha Lizzie, and Adeline. Following his first wife’s death, he married Mary Nicholson, and their family was Seymour, Hammond, Florence, and Lillian.
When William Thompson first came to this district, he lived in a log house until his own was ready. It was located on the Belmont Road across from the present residence of Mervin and Geraldine Inman. William’s son, Seymour, who carried on farm- ing operations after his father, bought sixty-five acres of land from Percy Nliller. He married Maggie MacLeod and they had a family of six: Ray, Earl, Hazel, Wilfred, Sterling, and Elmer.
Sterling lives on the family farm. He first married Doris Adams of O’Leary. They had four children: Brenda (Faren Stetson), Blair (Debbie Cole), Nancy Sirnpkins, and Valerie (Randy Birch). Sterling’s second wife is Bertie (Dawson) Yeo (see Yeo History). The Thompson name was often seen in the lists of St. James Methodist and the family has been active in the Lot 16 United Church. Sterling has been a steward and Bertie sings in the choir and is church caretaker. Blair’s home is adjacent to the farm house; he operates the family dairy farm enterprise. Elmer married Muriel Pye of Central Lot 16; they moved to St. Eleanor’s.
