gone on strike and won a number orconcessions, including elimina— tion of a dress code and removal of the policy that made theology mandatory.“ It St. Dunstan's board and Island Catholics seemed strangely acquiescent to the proposed merger, it was in part because SDU was no longer the Catholic school they remembered. Gen- erally, many Islanders disliked where their universities were going. Prince ot‘VVales was gaining a reputation as a hippie hangout, even a drug havens“ The author of 77.78 Guardian‘s “Bristol Notes” said, “What we need is a school for clean cut, clean shaved, washed—up [sic] teenagers, and one for cave dwellers or so called hippies.”1 In such an atmosphere, Alex Campbells announcement of a new uni— versity drew little opposition: conservatives saw it as a way to rein in a higher education system they were already paying for, and progres— sives were unlikely to favour instead the religiously tinged system of the past.
The many new faculty members at Prince ofVVales and St. Dun— stan’s who had arrived during expansion further weakened tradi— tions bond. In 1965—66, the PVVC calendar lists 37 faculty and stall“, the SDU calendar 38 (including 21 clergy). In 1968—69, PVVC listed 70‘, SDU 77 (including 23 clergy)" In the space ofjust three years, the number of university personnel on PEI doubled, from 75 to I47. Put another way, half had less than three years” attachment to either institution. And the new faculty were younger, and more often from off—Island.
VVhich is not to say that the new university was 11/2117 arramp/i. 'lhe Premier had not described what it would be like or even how it was to come about. Prince of Wales and St. Dunstans continued operations, accepting new students for the fall of1968. Otherwise,
