HOW LOVERS MEET Peter and Agnes MacPhee both worked for the J.J. Hughes Company in Souris . This company had stores in several parts of the Island. One store that they visited quite frequently was located in East Baltic . Peter and Agnes were sent to oversee the operation of the business. Agnes needed a housekeeper at the time, and was fortunate enough to find a young girl who was interested in obtaining this position. She was Mary Whalen , a jovial, five foot three, ninety pound lass with black shiny hair. This girl was the daughter of Jack and Kate Whalen. The MacPhee residence was very close to the Mooney house, so naturally, when Alex, an eligible bachelor, saw the new kid on the block, it was love at first sight. Helen, Alex's sister, had accepted a teaching position in Elmira school. She was boarding at Elijah Pierce 's, which was almost across the road from the Murphy residence, so Percy was all excited when he saw this new girl in the community. Each week they had a dance in the Elmira Hall , where all the young people gathered to have a good time. Helen loved music, so she joined the others at the dance as well. It was here that Percy, a fine looking desirable bachelor, asked this lady for a dance. Before long, he was not only asking her to dance, but he was taking her home. Through time, they were madly in love, and were engaged to be married. It so happened that Alex and Mary were also making wedding plans at the same time, so they decided to have a double wedding. The wedding was held on July 3, 1935, Reverend I.R. MacDonald performed the ceremony. Each couple chose to have their own attendants. Mary had Dorothy Chapman as her bridesmaid; Malcolm MacDonald , a friend of Alex's, was his best man. Helen had her sister, Isabel, as her attendant, and Percy had Thomas Harris , as his groomsman. Malcolm was sporting a shiny, black, two door Model A Sedan. Columbia and Gertie Campbell had a car as well, so they escorted Helen and Percy on their wedding day.
