shoes. It gave him a chuckle when everyone looked down at his footwear. Each morning I was given the task of polishing those special shoes before he paraded down street for some more eye catching moments. When it was time for him to return home to Boston, he gave me an American dollar for my efforts. It was worth $1.10 Canadian, so I had enough money to buy peppermints for our family for the rest of the summer. Each day, I would go to Matthew and MacLean's store and watch for Jimmy, who was very generous and always gave me a big bag of candy for five cents. In the evening our visitors socialized. Those who lived in the vicinity joined the other family members at the "Old Home" for an evening of fun. They were quite musical, but had few instruments, so Dad led the group with his mouth organ, Florence always had a comb that she covered with tissue paper before putting it to her mouth. She then produced such sweet music that a lark could not have done any better. Often a neighbor was a welcome visitor when he appeared with his fiddle. Sometimes "Happy Juice" added to the enjoyment of the evening and made them stepdance longer, and sing louder. They had as much fun as they would have experienced if they were on Broadway. The children were guests for the early part of the evening, and then we were sent off to bed. Before long, our relatives would be saying their good-byes and leaving for home. It seemed that they always had more luggage leaving than when they came. They loved our home made wild strawberry jam, and every other kind of jam that was available. The mustard pickles and chow made from the vegetables from our own garden could not be compared to any others. They were classed as the best. Cheese was another specialty that was found in their luggage bag. Again, it was a product that they felt that only Islanders could give it that special taste. Red Rose Tea was a must, for it was thought to have an unique flavor that was only found on Prince Edward Island . The list went on and on, as they said their good-byes for home. They were going to miss Prince Edward Island . They always left with the words, "We'll see you all next year". We were happy to see them go for it meant that we would be able to enjoy a good night's sleep in our own cosy little beds once more. 32
