some herself to satisfy the needs of her students.

It was difficult for one teacher to work with eight grades at the same time. Often there were only one or two in a grade, but the same amount of material had to be covered. The primary grades needed more attention that the others, because they could do very little on their own. The senior

grades were very generous in helping the younger students, but often used the wrong method of assisting them.

On the other hand, there was something about the school room that made you feel welcome. The students sat down at noon to have lunch together. The children were never sent to school without a lunch. In fact their lunch

cans were abundant with nourishment. If someone forgot their lunch can, everyone was happy to share.

I found that the children in the rural schools were very well disciplined, cooperative and considerate. The brighter students were able to increase their knowledge by listening to the senior grades. However, a slower student experienced more difficulty, and eventually fell by the way side.

The winter created some hardship for both teacher and students. The school yard was not plowed out, and, at that time there was more snow than there is now. It was a great challenge attempting to climb up over huge snow drifts trying to reach the school yard. By now my legs would be paining, since the only covering was a pair of thin nylons. Teachers at that time were not permitted to wear slacks to school.

As we unlocked the school door, my thoughts focused on the extremely cold roOm, with the frost penetrating through the seams. Standing next to me was the janitor, who was a student who rode to school with me. He was carrying a small bundle of kindling under his arm. How nice it would have been if the fire had been lit an hour before our arrival. We braved the Cold and placed our desks as near the stove as possible. Coats, caps and overshoes were left on until some heat filtered through the room. Finally, we were able to move our desks back when the room temperature began to use.

There was very little for the students to do at recess or lunch time during the winter months. It was too cold to go outdoors, so they often played games of finding places on the map. There was one large dictionary in the room that I had purchased. Some spent their time having a competition
