OUR FIRST BORN On June 4, 1959 we were delighted with the birth of our first baby. We had some anxious moments prior to this birth, when I experienced some difficulty, and spent thirteen days in the hospital. This baby boy, who had very visible red hair, tipped the scales at 61b. 2oz. We called him Kevin Joseph. At first we planned to call him Joseph after his father, but that would cause some problems. If I should call Joseph, both would come running at the same time. Kevin was a perfect alarm clock and kept us busy for the first year. He preferred to cry, rather than sleep. We never overslept, that's for sure. Now Mary Bell's name was changed to " Gram ". She enjoyed having Kevin on her lap while I was doing the chores. We had a collie dog named Bobby that was part of the family. He watched the new baby who seemed to be getting the attention that he used to get. Before long, Kevin started to take steps and we applauded his efforts. One evening Kevin stood up by the door. Unnoticed, Bobby put up his paw and marked Kevin's face with his claw. Kevin still has the scar on his face to this day. The next day, Bobby, had to go and we never had a dog since that time. When Kevin was two years old, he spent time outdoors following his father around. One particular day his father thought that he had remained in the house. When he went to investigate, Kevin was nowhere to be seen. I was in school, and unaware as to what was going on. Joe ran down and checked the lily pond, thinking that the worst might have happened, but found nothing. They were ready to call in a search party when his father found him asleep, cuddled up in the corner of the closet, surrounded by 58
