SUMMER FUN Summer was an enjoyable time for the children. They did have chores to do, but there was time to go to the beach where they met their cousins, and had fun together. They knew how to swim, for they had been enrolled in swimming lessons for several summers. Sunday was a special day, for we not only went swimming, but had a picnic as well. We packed a basket of sandwiches, cookies, Kool Ade and some other goodies. This was topped off with cones of ice cream purchased at Gert's store on the way home. On other occasions we went to the Wild , , Fantasy Land and on 4-H trips to various places on the Island. There was always a discussion as to who would come to Charlottetown with us when we went shopping. We only had a half ton truck, so, there was limited space for passengers. The most important part of the trip was to have dinner at the Town and Country Restaurant. The big deal there was to order french fries and pop. This was a relatively new commodity at that time, so everybody welcomed the change from the ordinary potato. Some of the children won 4-H trips to several Canadian Provinces, while Blair had the honor of going to Washington , D.C. Dianne traveled to Cromer, Manitoba . A second trip took her to Napanee, Ontario . Patsy went to , near Edmonton, Alberta, and later to a Citizenship Conference in Ottawa. Gary enjoyed a trip to , near Edmonton, Alberta. His second trip took him to a Citizenship's Conference in Ottawa. Terry visited Waskada, Manitoba on an exchange trip. He and Kevin also attended a Citizenship Conference in Ottawa. Dianne was able to make her own prom dress after taking sewing lessons as part of her 4- H Project . She also won the Junior Title Award for P.E.I , for her demonstration on "How to make butter". They have all received many trophies for their efforts. The boys belonged to the calf club, and had their father as their leader. It meant that they had to raise a calf from birth. Blair was responsible for building a hutch to house his calf. When the first Holstein calf arrived, it was immediately placed in the unheated hutch where Blair fed and cared for it on a daily basis. It was the first experience that they had on the farm in 94
