Agriculturist May 25,1946 - During the war people were asked by way of newspa¬ per ads to give their fur coats to be made into vests for sailors and merchant marines - they having to face the hazards of bitter wind and cold in the steady pursuit of their war duties. "Put your old fur coat on active service", was the slogan of those who sought coats of fur pieces from the general public. The expense of the project was borne by the fur industry as a whole, and the time necessary for making the vests was given voluntarily by members of the International Fur Workers Union. V-E (VICTORY IN EUROPE) DAY The Island Farmer of May 15,1945 described V-E Day in Elmsdale : "The news that the European War had ended was very warmly received in this community.
