FOREWORD
I had the delightful privilege of being the Senior Pastor of the Charlottetown Baptist Church in 1986 when it celebrated its 150th Anniversary. What an exciting time! There were special events every month of the year. We thanked God for all that He had done in and through the Church over the century and a half. The Charlottetown Baptist Church has had a remarkable history. For 170 years it has been a witness for Jesus Christ in the community. The beginnings were small, but the founders were men and women of solid faith and the work grew and prospered. The road was not always smooth, but God remained faithful. The wonderful Christian people who have supported its ministry have made the Church what it is today. Its influence has reached far and wide as its ministers and members served in their City, in the Association, in the Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches, and even beyond. The amazing group that makes up the congregation in 2006 will assure the good work begun long ago will continue into the distant future.
One would like to turn back the clock and sit in on some of the events of the past, and meet some of the dedicated members. This book will give readers the opportunity to do just that. It is so important that this interesting story be preserved for future generations. Deacon Alfred Stems in 1904, Dr. J. A. Clark in 1959 and a few others since, wrote brief and informative histories of the Church. How fortunate that now a few people have had the vision to record the memorable highlights in much more detail. Ron Atkinson, Chris Austin, and Ross Howard have put hours of careful research into this project. This comprehensive record is a result of their untiring efforts. I am confident that what they have done will bring enjoyment and encouragement to those who read it, and glory to Jesus Christ, who ”loved the Church and gave himself up for her.” (Eph. 5:25)
