Preface
By the time our research was completed to the year 1900, in the history of the Charlottetown Baptist Church, there was no question that the dominating factor in the church’s growth through the 19th century was the members’ examples of faith in God and their leader’s decisions, through some very challenging times. If there is one thing the Charlottetown First Baptist Church today has inherited from those who have gone before, for over 170 years, it is their examples of an unquestioned faith in God. The title for our story came easily, as it documents ’A Legacy of Faithf
We have attempted to seek out the complete story from existing microfilm, old newspaper stories and bits and pieces from family histories. It is a sometimes exhausting effort requiring hours of reading to find one item, but that item is often the link that opens another door. We do realize that a great deal of prior information was lost in the church fire of 1888.
Our special thanks to families and members of First Baptist for their assistance in providing photos and historical data. It is the availability of this information that has helped make this story possible.
Researching and finding historical information is never ending, and at some point we had to say enough, and put the story together. There is no question that having this history of the Church will lead to the recovery of new information, and it will only add to this story. All First Baptist historical information is now safely preserved in the Provincial Archives in Charlottetown, for access by future generations. Any new information found should be added to it, for their benefit.
It has been an interesting exercise, done to the glory of God, and this history will hopefully inspire members of the First United Baptist Church of Charlottetown through realization of the legacy of faith that theyhave inherited from the past two centuries.
