their new addition could be achieved at a lower cost and with more total space. When the project was officially approved, Deacon Clark noted that once again in the life of the Charlottetown Baptist Church the Lord had led the way, and as long as faith was placed in Him, good things would happen. Deacon Percy Proud had headed the Property Committee for many years and took a personal interest in every phase of the expansion work effort, making sure that costs and schedules were kept in line. Construction began in late 1937, and the new Sunday School addition was opened in October of 1938. Pastor Denton's leadership had paid off, and in tribute more than jest, the new basement expansion became affectionately referred to as "Denton's Dugout". It is interesting to note that the accumulated Debt Fund, plus a generous contribution from the Ladies Guild, went a long way toward covering the cost of expansion. Although it was not noted in financial statements, LadiesGuild assistance appears to have been approximately $5,000. The $3,500 from the Building Fund included a special "expansion contribution" from 72 Church members, which ranged from $1 to a high of $100. Most amounts contributed were noted beside the member's names, although some simply indicated "a friend" or "anon." The most interesting, and perhaps in keeping with the season that the statement was issued, was a $5 donation that was simply noted as coming from "Santa Claus". The 4th Scout Troop, now under the dedicated leadership of Colonel Dan Bell with Assistant Scoutmasters Lloyd Manuel and Nelson Robinson , continued to have an impact on the lives of many young boys in the church. In 1939, the full Troop, with their Scoutmaster and assistants, attended the big Maritime Jamboree organized to commemorate the official opening of , the new Boy Scout Camp at Point Prim , PEL The Boy Scout movement was providing character building qualities in a Christian atmosphere. Many community leaders today, in both political and private sector, attribute their success to the foundation they received in scouting. Rangers were also an important group of young men in the church. Trail Ranger members were boys in their early teens; graduates of scouting who were three or four years too young to qualify for military service but needed strong Christian leadership to help them understand the deteriorating world situation. In September of 1939, war clouds were once again on the horizon in Europe. Adolph Hitler and his German forces invaded Poland, triggering a terrible war that would have an affect around the world for the next six years, and in the early stages even threatened the shores of Vickers Wellington Prince Edward Island. As Bombing missions over Germany with Islanders onboard happened in 1914, many young men and women from Charlottetown , including over 100 members of the Baptist congregation, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces to serve their country and fight to preserve freedom. By the spring of 1940, the war in Europe was not going well. A new Royal Air
