roles in the church and helping to make major decisions, in guiding future planning and direction. In September, a number of youth groups, with their own campsite not yet fully developed, held a successful retreat at the YMCA Holland Cove Camp at Rocky Point. In October, Malcolm Harlow conducted an interesting four week series of sermons, answering the questions, ”Why be a Christian?”, ”Why be a Church Member?”, ”Why be a Protestant?” and ”Why be a Baptist?”.
The Board of Management of First Baptist
received a new name at the annual meeting in 1964. It would now be called The Board ofAdministration, ., and their first church moderator under the new name would be Chartered Accountant Ralph A Manning. The Board of Administration would be fully in charge of all church operations and decisions. It continued to consist of the pastor and chairmen of all boards, committees, groups and associations. One of their first actions in 1964 was to have a congregational photo taken, believed to be the first effort in this regard. It was not a large group picture as one might expect; it was a pre-planned Sunday morning photo of the congregation, as they sat in the sanctuary with the pastor y and choir parading down the aisle.
A deal for the property across the corner, including the old church and parsonage, was finally completed in April of 1964, when it was sold to the Salvation Army for $30,000. The money was immediately used to pay off the loan for the new parsonage property on Ambrose Street and the balance was applied against the mortgage. The old church buildings were demolished and the Salvation Army erected a new citadel on the site, replacing the old one they had recently vacated on Great George Street, now University Avenue. The move for the Army was a good one, because their old vacated citadel collapsed from an excessive snow load, in the winter of 1971. All of the small decorative stained glass windows
