the work of Baptist laymen. Jeanette Lipe, Rev. Mike’s wife, was an energetic and involved member of the church. She was secretary of the Commission on Christian Sharing, that as a major priority was supporting the youth ministry being led by Chester MacPhail and Debbie Myers. Jeanette Lipe was also a powerful vocalist and was a valuable addition to the Senior Choir.
In April, Pastor Frank Locke organized a special evangelistic service to take advantage of a noted speaker who was on an evangelistic tour of the Atlantic provinces. Dr. John Gladstone, senior pastor of the Yorkminster Park Baptist Church in Toronto, was by reputation one of the finest gospel preachers in the nation, and having him in the First Baptist pulpit was a special treat for the congregation. Pastor Locke himself was honored in August by being asked to preach the convention sermon at the annual meetings in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
Rev. Michael Lipe loved to write and had a background in bulletin development and editing. When the Atlantic Baptist Convention announced they were looking for a new editor for their Atlantic Baptist magazine, he applied and was hired. Michael and Jeanette Lipe had been vibrant contributors to First Baptist for four years. They departed in May, 1985 to pursue a venture that would allow him to keep in close touch with the Charlottetown Church. There was an activity increase in thefall when a new Beaver program for boys 5-7 years old was organized, attempting to regenerate interest in national youth programs.
Rev. Ross Howard is not listed as a pastor over the years at First Baptist, but Pastor Frank Locke referred to him as the church’s ”Unofficial Assistant Minister”. Ross Howard came to Charlottetown from the O’Leary Baptist Church in 1957. He became the Protestant Chaplain serving the Charlottetown Hospitals and a number of other local institutions, where he remained until he retired. When they moved to the city, the Howard family immediately became members of First Baptist, and since that time have been an intregal part of the activity within the church. Ross Howard has been invaluable to incoming pastors, served as a deacon and was a member ofjust about every group and committee (the WMS grOups would not accept him!). He supplied in the pulpit when needed, and he and his wife Virginia have long served as valued members of the First Baptist choir. Ross Howard is also one of the trio responsible for the preparation of this Legacy of Faith.
The First Baptist bus ministry literally ran out of gas when the last vehicle fell into disrepair, despite the tremendous effort over the years by member Bill Dalziel, whose body shop kept the vehicles on the road much longer than might be expected. The need for the bus ministry was reduced even further when new local people transfer Systems appeared in the mid 19805. There was still a need for church transportation, and the Men's Association initiated a special fund raising campaign to pay for the Used 14-passenger van they had just purchased.
