On alternate Fridays the teacher usually allotted time in the late afternoon to the Junior Red Cross program. The student-president opened the meeting with roll call, and each of us was expected to “sing, say, or pay.” The pay most often consisted of giving a penny or two to a small fund that would eventually be forwarded to Red Cross headquarters in Charlottetown. The meeting appointed various committees to handle such duties as cleaning the chalkboard and brushes, carrying a supply of drinking water daily from Hicken’s store (a short distance down the road), the “health” committee, whose function was to inspect for clean hands each morning, and the program committee. Very little time was actually
