A few wooden shelters accommodated some of the animals while the remaining horses were tethered to trees or fence posts during services. Neighbors and friends spent time immediately after church socializing in the churchyard. The two Protestant churches were smaller, wooden structures and were always nicely painted and maintained. St. Paul’s was a much larger building, constructed of Island sandstone and Nova Scotia granite. It was designed by the famous Island architect William Harris and was built by local, volunteer labor in 1888 under the guidance of the pastor, Father William Phelan, from County Wexford, Ireland. His remains rest in a
