The homes in the community were all farm-style houses. Most of them were two storey structures finished on roof and sides with cedar shingles. Paint was a luxury that few families could afford, so the usual exterior, cosmetic finish was an annual coating with whitewash. It was a suspension of lime in water, and was applied to the shingles of the four walls with a wide brush. It gave a sparkling, white dressing when it dried. On rainy days it looked dull and grey but quickly regained its bright, white self when the sun and wind evaporated the absorbed moisture.
