This kept out cold drafts and helped prevent mice and other rodents from moving into the house for the winter. Dad attached a hook-on porch to the main entrance, and the house was then snuggly wrapped for the winter ahead. Some homes had a large, permanent porch that could accommodate several tiers of wood, a convenience when the snow banked deeply between the house and the woodshed. Spring saw the reverse of autumn chores. Off came the storm windows and doors and on went the window screens and screen doors. Removing the banking was a sure sign that summer was not far off.
