The Seasons
As youngsters we were always very excited when the first few snowflakes began to fall. Snow was usually expected in late October or by Remembrance Day in November, at the latest. For us it signaled the upcoming Christmas season and lots of winter fun: hockey games on the frozen river; skating at night around a burning car tire at “the big pond” located in a swamp across from the school; huge snow forts, tunnels and caves dug into heavy snow
banks; and coasting on “John Griffin’s hill.”
