     big tricks were hauling a farmer’s wagon 
     
     from the yard down to his gate, or to a 
     
     field across the road, pelting rocks on the 
     
     roof of a house in the hope of being 
     
     chased by the irate owner, or stealing a 
     
     garden gate and hiding it somewhere. 
     
     The greatest feat of all was upsetting the 
     
     privy, with extra points scored if the man 
     
     of the house had been waiting inside to 
     
     ward off the inevitable attack. 
     
    

    
     Soon after Halloween the Christmas 
     
     catalogues from Eaton’s and Simpson’s 
     
     arrived. We spent many hours perusing 
     
     the pages and pages of wonderful ideas 
     
     for Santa, who would be making his 
     
     annual visit in the not—too-distant future.
