Weddings

A wedding was one of the big social events in the community. Roman Catholic weddings took place in the morning because the wedding party had to abstain from food and drink, except water, from the previous midnight until they received communion the next morning. Consequently, following the mid—moming nuptials at the church, the wedding party and invited guests assembled at the home of the bride or groom for the wedding breakfast.

The “breakfast” was a full course meal of roast beef or chicken, with all the trimmings, followed by a huge selection of homemade pies, cakes and squares.
