The first or second night, upon their returning home, the couple awoke to a great din outside their residence. Friends and neighbours, armed with pots and pans, whistles, a shotgun or two, and anything else that could be used to create a great commotion, gathered in front of the newly—weds house for the chivaree! The clamor and the shouting continued until the bedraggled, startled couple made an appearance at the door. The bride and groom were expected to invite the revelers in for a drink or, at the very least, offer a treat of cake or cookies at

the door.
