rwin “Red” Andrew experienced a

very distinguished career in the

Royal Canadian Air Force that spanned 27 years in five Canadian provinces and a term in Metz, France. He had a second career as an auditor in Social Services for 17 years at the provin— cial government of Prince Edward Island. He and Joyce, his wife of 62 years, were blessed with three boys Brian, Bill and Rollin. Blake, Rachel, Katie, Kristie and Dylan were his cherished grandchildren, and Cohen was his great grandchild.

This gentleman was a modest and con— scientious person who made lifetime friendships during his careers and contin- ued to make new friendships during his retirement. He had a passion for harness racing and a love for horses that he developed as a child from his father Blair who was a professional trainer and driver of standardbreds in the Maritime provinces. Somehow it seemed fitting that at Erwin’s funeral in Milton, seven broodmares and three colts watched the proceedings motionless in a nearby out— door paddock as his casket was being carried to the cemetery by the pallbearers.

Photo: ail MacDonald Edward Island into an environment where horses were always present. After completing his formal education, he spent time working with horsemen like Willard Kelly before he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

While he and Joyce were stationed in Clinton. Ontario, Sydney. Nova Scotia or any city that had a racetrack handy. he would always make an effort to attend the races as a fan. In later years, he was proud to inform his sons that in Clinton in the 1950s, he had an opportunity to see Hall of Eamerjohn Campbell’s grand— father and Lieutenant Governor Rowe at that track. During his tenure with the Air Force, Erwin always seemed to own a mare with his father back home where the family enjoyed annual holidays.

Erwin's son, Bill reminisced, “When dad met my mother, he owned Charming Gay, a nondescript horse that probably was the first horse under his name. Blair may have bought him from his Uncle George Brookins or he may have been bartered for a cow or a binder.“ Elwin owned a number of stallions, brood— mares and race horses over the years.
