g; , t was during the fall of 1988 that two Island horsemen at the Charlottetown Driving Park had a compelling idea. Jack Arsenault and Jim Howatt wanted to buy a really good racehorse but it would be too expensive for just the two of them. To solve this dilemma, they searched for people who might be interested in form— ing a stable or syndicate to purchase a racehorse. Before long, they had round— ed up enough people, mainly from the Parkdale area, who were interested in their idea. The Parkdale Stable was born and almost before they knew it they bought a four—year—old mare from Ontario for $10,000. Airborne Cbandler was her name and she had a very respectable win record of 2:00.51 taken at Flamboro in Ontario. The Parkdale Stable contacted John Holmes, a well known Islander on the Ontario racing scene. He recommended Airborne Cbandler and the deal was done. Fate determined that Airborne Cbandler was to have a very brief racing career for this syndicate. She made only four starts for this enthusiastic and hopeful group. Unfortunately. she bowed a tendon severely enough to end her racing career; however. a new and different career was in the cards and Airborne Cbandler joined the broodmare ranks. An excel- lent decision, as history will attest. Who would be her first mate and the father of her first foal? The well—known and respected sire. Harrods was chosen and this union produced Airborne Gorerness who would play a major suc— cessful role in this saga a few years down the road. Goz'erness seemed to be a “real one" and took an early record of 2:05 when an unfortunate injury ended her racing career, but this was not the last to be heard from Airborne Gouerness. Siblings to Governess were Airborne Nukes (2:04), Airborne [lee (2205.2) and Airborne Ann (2:06). Tragically, Chandler's foals ended their racing careers as youngsters also. The cards seemed to be stacked against the Parkdale Stable but there was no quitting. 157
