At the conclusion of my interview with this very talented and personable trainer and driver, Gilles offered a perspective on a very pertinent topic. With deter- mined sincerity he explained, “If you want to have success as a trainer, you have to be up front with all of your own- ers. That is very important. There is no time for lies when it comes to owners.

You have to be up front and tell them like it is. If their horse is no good, you must tell them the truth. You should not keep them hoping just because they offer guaranteed income for you at the end of each month.” This may help to explain why Gilles Barrieau was achieving suc- cess in a very competitive industry and why he may well be even more success- ful in the future.
