The Basilica Recreation Centre — Before and Afi‘er
On September 16‘“, 1963, the Guardian had a four page spread announcing the grand opening of the Basilica Recreation Centre. The headline read:
“BASILICA RECREATION CENTER IS READY FOR OFFICIAL OPENING SLATED TONIGHT”
“Charlottetown’s most modern structure for recreation will be opened officially this evening at 8 pm. when Most Rev. Malcolm MacEachern, bishop of Charlottetown officiates at the dedication ceremony. Unveiling of the cornerstone will also take place during the ceremonies.
“The general public is invited to attend the opening, which will be held in the auditorium. Eugene Cullen, Chairman of the Board and Management, will be
chairman for the occasion.
“One of Canada’s top sportscasters, Danny Gallivan, has been engaged as guest speaker. Mayor Walthen Gaudet will introduce the guest speaker. Mr Gallivan is married to a former Charlottetown girl, Eileen MacPhee, daughter of the late
H. F. MacPhee and Mrs. MacPhee. They have four children.
“St. Dunstan’s Basilica parish built the multi-purpose recreational and cultural centre. The building committee, chaired by Matt Hagen, collected ideas from various parish organizations and submitted these plans to the Architect, Peter
MacNeill.
“A total of 58 rooms are contained in the three-floor structure, the air conditioned basement contains the 14 lane bowling alley and offices, a cafeteria with seating capacity of 64, nursery, Boy Scout and Girl Guide rooms, a games room for ping pong, chess, checkers etc. In addition there are several
small rooms.
“The 106 by 70 foot auditorium occupies the greater part of the first floor. With attractive tile floor and wood panelling walls, this modern area includes a large stage and the latest in lighting. It is equally adaptable for dancing, drama, gym classes, sports and large conventions.
