By Land and By Air
package was. I often admired his knowledge. He was one of the top students in Prince of Wales College where he went to college. His first cousin had a trucking business and sometimes I went with him. All in all, I saw a lot of Boston and neighbouring towns. The only extra charge on the ticket was 50 cents more to see New York, but I wanted to say I was there. From Boston to Vancouver took me 17 days and nights on the bus. All the sleep I got during that time was on the bus, a long haul for a greenhorn. Food was cheap - I think the most expensive meal was 40 cents for a dinner. I never met anyone to talk to, just slept and looked out the window of the bus. I often wished that I had taken notes, instead of trying to recall events after 75 years. I saw so much country that it is hard to recall much of the trip. I used to try to sit behind the bus driver, as I used to get sick if I went to the back.
One night we were travelling along the Grand Canyon; the road was fairly narrow along the side of the mountain, about 2,000 feet to the top, and the river about 1,000 feet below. I was wondering what would happen if the driver went to sleep at the wheel and lost control. Shortly after this, I snoozed off to sleep and suddenly I was dreaming of sliding down into the river below - what a feeling when I struck the water. I awoke to find the bus crossways on the road. There was a lightning storm and the telephone wires were across the road. He cracked the windshield, and knocked off the front light. I got out and ran back after the light. We all had to sign accident reports, except for one man who never awoke during the accident. I can tell you I had many more scrapes, especially flying over Germany, but I don’t think that any of my experiences were equal to the trip along the Grand Canyon.
In Idaho the temperature was 20 degrees - I saw my first delivery, which was done on the back seat of the bus.
