1 learn the value of history that one would be able to use in the future, instead of a dry course one had to wade through in school and college.
That was the year when the new Falconwood Hospital was built after the fire. I can recall the mental patients shouting out the windows of the old candy factory on Hillsborough Street. As we passed by, little did I think that long into the future I would work part time for 12 years, checking mental patients. Old Age Pensions started on July 15t of that year. The grand total cost to government that year was $758,700.69.
At the end of the year I went back to Prince of Wales College for a pre—medical course. My grade X students were in first year including one of my sisters. Following my third year I returned to Little Sands school where I taught for another three years. Following my first year teaching, I worked in a shook mill (making boxes) for the summer for 11 cents an hour. We were expected to work in the mill all day, and then help with the farm work. I really enjoyed that summer as we went to a dance almost every night. One of the workers got a Ford car and we used to pay him 25 cents for the passage to the dances. The only trouble was that he got very drunk usually and the drive home was not always in a straight line.
One of my summer vacations, when not working on the farm, I got a job working on a bridge at 25 cents an hour and every cent I got helped for my education.
