By Land and By Air

1909 when they were looking for oil. When I scrubbed up, Dr. Doug said in his most sarcastic voice ”Are you sure you came from Little Sands?”

One of the things I learned in medicine was, that things have changed over the years. We studied Anatomy for a year and a half; today, students study less than half a yean

I recall a story of when the students had to get their own cadavers; they used to even rob graves. Two young students got a horse and wagon years ago and went and dug up a grave which was newly buried. A man came along who, along with his other tricks, liked to play jokes on people and when he saw them digging, he hid by the wagon. When they removed the body from the grave they put it in a sack, put it in the wagon, and went back to fill the grave. The joker took the body out of the sack and climbed in himself. When the students finished filling the grave, they ran to the wagon, jumped in and started away at a great pace with the body sack between them. When a bump came, the man in the sack would give a shoulder to one and then the other. This was not enough, as they spurred the horse to greater speed. They struck a big bump, the man in the sack said, ”take it easy boys,” and each student leaped out of the wagon while the horse sped on. After a time this big man cut himself out of the bag, turned the horse around, and buried the body again. Although he advertised the horse and wagon, no one ever claimed them.

At the end of second year, I heard of Frontier College and made an application. One sometimes gets blips on the TV about this college, Head Office in Toronto. They hire people for the summer to go to work with gangs of immigrant workers, on railways, mines, forests, etc. I was sent to Port Mann, BC, which is on the opposite bank
