When I worked at the DVA, I decided tojoin the Militia. They paid $18.00 for a full day and $8.00 for an evening. I was a Medical Officer (Captain) and had to at- tend all parades. I stayed in the Militia until I got the CD medal (Canadian Decoration). Having served for a total of 12 years, I decided to quit.

I remember one time when I was in Nova Scotia, and 1 almost broke my neck trying to catch the ferry home, much to my wife’s great disgust. I was determined to be in Victoria Park, Charlottetown, in time for the firing of the guns on a holiday, all for $8.00.

I used to take offa week in the summer and attend summer camp, trying to harden up to army life, shaving in cold water, etc. One week in Debert, I missed one day, because I was coming home each day, working my DVA hours, going down to Eldon to see a number of patients (before Medicare), and then racing back to Debert.

That year, I celebrated July lst, our anniversary, by passing my wife on her way to her mother’s home in Fal- mouth as I raced back home to be in time for office hours in Eldon. I have made more money in an hour on several occasions than I made for that whole week.

One year, Sterling Squarebriggs and 1 went to camp in New Brunswick. The day before I went, I bought a new hat, putting it in the back window of my car. When I got home, I went to Riverside to do my ward rounds. The fol- lowing day, I noted that my hat looked like an old hat, and thinking that it could not stand the rays ofthe sun, I took the hat back to the store. They agreed that it had too much
