which was usually negative as there were no marked out- breaks of disease activity in my time. They would send me on trips to visit homes.

I remember one time they asked me to report on a goat which the children were playing with. It was remarked that the goat had an infection on its head. At the next meet— ing of Council, I responded that no infection was noted. One ofthe councillors, I guess to hear his own voice, asked what sex was the goat. I quickly answered that it was not that end that I was supposed to examine. The mayor quick- ly changed the subject.

Small problems came up from time to time. One was the terrible smell in the area above Spring Park school. It was found that the park, which was located on a swamp and had a great deal of mud had been covered over with a deep layer of clay. This caused the methane gas to seep up through the clay from the covered mud. I never heard any more complaint.

I was always impressed at the goings on at the council meetings, where several of the members were more interested in having themselves heard than in coming up with sound statements. One man I was favourably im- pressed with, and who always used common sense, was the present mayor, George MacDonald.

One little knows what is going on in the town ifone does not visit the dives. One house I was asked to visit, I had to step over several men lying drunk on the floor.

During my time in DVA, I attained two scholarships through Family Practice, for a couple of hours training - one was on “hearts” in Halifax. I spent many months of reading before I went. Possibly, I got more out ofthe read— ing than I did out of the course.
