Horse drawn hiller, a traditional piece of farm equipment. A typical farm property housed a lot of buildings. There usually was one big main barn which held dairy cattle at one end and horses at the other. In the centre of this barn was where the threshing was done and the grain was stored. Often there was a lean-to built onto this barn used as a sheep shed. The farm yard also had a pig house, a chicken house and a goose house ( Turkeys were not common until the early 60's). There was also a wood shed, well house, cart shed, work shop and an outhouse. The last "must have" building was for the automobile. However, when a tractor was purchased, the automobile lost its building. There were no potato warehouses in Argyle Shore until the 1970's. All potatoes before then were stored in the cellars of the houses. Some barns had root cellars to store turnips and/or mangels.
