Tile History of Argylc Shore gift and candy canes for each of the children. The gift was bought by the teacher for each of the students. The last gift presented was to the teacher from the students. Most often Santa asked the teacher for a kiss before passing it over. The crowd always got a great bang out of this! Santa then left the hall telling the children to be good little boys and girls and that he would visit each of them on Christmas Eve. The evening then closed with the singing of "God Save the Queen". The children hurried to their parents to show them their presents and to get praise for a job well done. The teachers were often informally evaluated by the community from the calibre of the concert presented. They were aware that their reputations were at stake and aimed to present as good or better a concert than the ones in the neighbouring communities. The preparation for the Christmas Concert took a lot of class time but, nevertheless, much learning took place. The children were taught a great variety of skills and many good memories were made. Other fun events were the school fairs, when students put their finest work on display, and school closings which were always held at MacDougall 's beach. The business of the school at Argyle Shore , as in other communities, was in the hands of the community. A secretary was appointed and taxes were collected. The teacher's supplement was paid and money was used for all other things needed for the running of the school. The trustees were elected for a three year term and were responsible for the hiring of the teacher and for keeping the schoolhouse in good shape. 44
