Education Some of the changes that took place over the six years were: a telephone was installed, a music teacher ( Mrs. Keith Boswell ) travelled from school to school, a phys-ed teacher came to the school the last couple of years, a principal was involved, and Parent-Teacher interviews were introduced. Teaching six grades was a challenge, yes, but the children all listened well and were always polite and mannerly. Discipline was really not an issue. The first couple of years that I taught, Remembrance Day was not a holiday. We observed a minute's silence standing by our desks. However, one memorable Remembrance Day comes to mind when one of the parents and I took the children to the Remembrance Day service at Kelly's Cross Church. During the service, it snowed heavily making for a challenging drive home. Thankfully, we got home safely. Our Christmas concert was certainly a highlight of the year with everyone knowing their parts well and looking magnificent! Oh how we practised those recitations, dialogues, drills, pageants, carols, and choruses. Santa would arrive to distribute presents to all. These concerts were held in Argyle Shore Hall which was down the road from the school. In the winter months, each Friday afternoon we would go skating at the Crapaud Rink. The teacher would take a car load of children and the parents took turns driving as well. At the end of the school year we would have our picnic at Bonshaw 500, Fairyland, or . This was a special fun time for everyone to relax and socialize. The Women's Institute always worked hard to provide supplies for the school. One major purchase the WI made was that of a "gestetner" to make copying tests easier for the teacher. Prior to that, I used carbon paper. Also, I bought a package of stencils and a package of paper. I had Joan MacPhail run my tests off using the gestetner at the Crapaud School where she taught. The children produced a bimonthly newspaper called, "The Hot Potato". It was a fun, learning experience for them getting their articles ready and meeting deadlines. "The Mystery of Argyle Shore " was also written. We could do these things because of the gestetner. Each of the six years that I taught in Argyle Shore , the children had a surprise birthday party for me, complete with birthday cake 49
