The I listory ot James MacDougall , Ewen MacDougall , Richard Westaway , Horace MacEwen , William Underhay , and Ewen (Ted) MacDougall , the son of the first Ewen MacDougall . Reverend William Underhay , who taught in Argyle Shore in 1953, remembers being asked to conduct a prayer meeting in the hall one evening when the minister was unable to attend. As a result, he was asked to conduct the services for a period of time. He met one of his former pupils years later and she remembered him as both a teacher and a preacher. He later attended the Free Church of Scotland College in Edinburgh, Scotland . He became an ordained minister and returned to serve in the in P.E.I. Several supply ministers from Scotland also conducted services over the years. These were men who would come out for a short period of time and then return to their homeland. Some of these were: Robert Christie , Jim Fraser , Allister Johnson , Robert J. Murray , John Gillis , Ken Cameron , and John MacLeod . In speaking to some of the members from that time, it was learned that services were held every Sunday and a mid-week service and prayer meeting was held as well. The hall would be full to capacity. The habit of that time was that the men would sit on the left side of the hall and the women on the right. The elders would sit at the front with the minister and two or three of them would be asked by the minister to lead the congregation in prayer during the service. Because there are no musical instruments used in the Free Church, the singing of the psalms is led by a leader (presenter) who chooses the tune, sings the first few words of the psalm, and the congregation then joins in. In those days, when books were scarce, the presenter would sometimes use the method of "lining out" the psalm. He would chant each line and the congregation would listen carefully and sing it back. This was especially impressive if the psalm was sung in "the Gaelic". Some of the earlier presenters were: Neil MacNevin , Silas Murley , John Betts , Archie MacDonald and George MacDonald . Sunday School was also conducted in the hall and this was continued until the early 1960's. One of the earlier superintendents was Silas Murley while Hector MacNevin conducted it in later years. Some of the teachers were Euphemia MacPhail , Pauline MacPhail , and Elizabeth MacEachern . S 4
