15. Doug fs’joan Machail (The Colin John MacPhail Homestead)
On May 27, 1877, Colin John McPhail made this entry in his diary, “Moved into the new house today”. Colin John, the last-born child of John McPhail and Mary McLean, married Annie (Currie), the daughter of John and Isabella (McKay) Currie from DeSable.1hey had a family of six children: John Dan (moved to the USA and joined the American Army), Arthur (remained in the home), Walter Scott (married Lulu MacPhail of Argyle Shore), Frederick (died of TB at the age of 21), lVlalcolm (Mack) (married Elizabeth MacDonald of Bonshaw and bought the farm across the road), and Flora (died at birth).
Walter and Lulu inherited the farm and had two sons, Kenneth who died at birth, and Douglas Scott. Walter died of a ruptured appendix when Douglas was only seven but, fortunately, Lulu was able to keep the farm in operation with the help of hired men and her brothers, Wilbert and John Donald, until Douglas was of age to take over.
