2 7. Cary 59’ Diane Machail (The Colin MacPhail Homestead)

The family home of Gary and Diane MacPhail was constructed previous to the 1850s on the original 100 acre homestead property owned by one ofGary’s ancestors, hialcolm lVlacPhail, who emigrated to Argyle Shore with his family in September 1810, from Killiemor, Isle of 1V1ull, Scotland.

It is believed that this home (part ofit)was built by Malcolm and Flora (lVchean) son, Colin (1793-1871), with his second wife, Mary whom he married about 1840. Colin took possession of~ this property at his father’s death in 1821. The original home was thought to have been a log cabin near the shore of the Northumberland Strait.

All the framework of the house was built using hewed lumber pegged together (no nails). It was then double boarded with squared nails, covered with white birch bark and then shingled. Colin and Mary lived here with their two children, Anne and Neil, and also likely some of Colin’s seven children from his first wife, Christian (Christy) (Campbell), who died in 1832.
