OUT OF THIN AIR My father and Mrs. Fitzgerald got along famously, she had been on the air many years when she thought up the idea of selling goodwill advertising at Christmas. She told not a soul but bought an hour from Dad for Christmas Day . He was extremely busy and didn't ask her what she was going to do with it. When she came back for another hour, he still neglected to ask although he was curious. When she requested a third hour, he sold it to her for New Year's Day. It was then that he woke up to the realization that this tiny older lady had scooped the sales staff and sold out three solid hours. He called together Art McDonald and those connected with sales and gave them an intense lecture on the necessity of keeping abreast of the times. He rammed home the message that they should get out into the community and really go to work. As he left the room, he could barely suppress a chortle. Like most people in radio, Flo had her bloopers. The LePage Shoe Store received a new shipment of galoshes. It was during the sloppy spring weather. In all innocence she went on air with a commercial warning her customers: Buy your galoshes today, Don't get caught up-town With nothing but your rubbers on! All day people kept dropping into the sponsor's store, buying the galoshes and laughing their heads off. 72
