Today I do not feel hungry at all, but will be better in a few days. Monday, Jan. 6th. Got back from hospital this morning feeling fine, nice day too. Quite calm and no sea running. A sad accident happened last week and was forgotten by me at the time. 7 A heavy ice chest weighing about ten tons broke away from its position with the motion of the ship, and pinned a poor fellow against the after hatch way. He died about a half an hour afterwards and was buried same afternoon. This seemed to cast a gloom over the rest of the party but it was not long until all were in good spirits again. Tuesday Jan. 7th. Feeling fine and enjoying things more than at any time since leaving Victoria. Fine day. Wednesday 8th January. Fine day snowing in the afternoon. On Monday in the bad storm8 one of our propellers left without giving any notice. They are speaking of putting into Yokohama for repairs. she makes only 5 knots in this storm. Thursday Jan. 9th. Colder but smooth sea, approaching the Straits of Saugon and can feel the difference in the roll of the ship. The wind blowing offshore, and makes very little sea. Making about nine or ten knots, doing well for one propeller. Friday Jan. 10th. Still running along at about 10 knots per hour with only one propeller. If we had two in this weather we could almost go twice as fast. 7 - )1 This was the storm ofJanuary l X This was the second storm of hunicane intensity which occurred on January 6‘”.
