Todd and I made up our bunk and am writing this in bed. Sgt. Major Ryan has just shouted "lights out" so out goes the candle. There is a report tonight the Bolsheviks have begun a big campaign against the Poles and that we will be likely to go on to Omsk. Would like to go see a little more of Russia and possibly some fighting. Monday. Jan. 20. Reveille this morning at 6:30. Had a wash in a real basin. Things are in better shape though they can improve a lot more yet. Water must be carried from the well and all dirty water must be carried down two flights of stairs and emptied outside. This is because of the frost stopping up the waste pipes. Possibly in a little while a better system will be arranged. Got down to the room at 9 am. and tried to kill time as best I could until 1:00 p.m. when my relief came. Had a poor dinner but am promising myselfa better supper as our own kitchen and dining room will be fixed up. Just came from supper. It was better, good tea and bread, butter and jam but no wait for it, so all are satisfied. Got an issue of Pirate cigarettes. 4 to each man. All smoking and no bumming. Tuesday. Jan. 2]. 19. Had a walk this morning, as I do not go on duty till 5:00 tonight. Went up some hills to the north near where the Jap barracks are. Saw two Jap soldiers who remained with us all morning. Took their pictures and traded cigarettes. They had the worst of the trade too as our issue of last night was rotten and theirs were very good. Had quite a time trying to make them understand us, but got along fairly well. They wanted to
