they were getting $1.00 for an article when in reality a yen is worth only half that. It is hard to fool Japs though. Friday. Jan. 24. Went to Vladivostok this morning. Rode in box cars for nothing. They had seats along the side and through the center and were warm and comfortable. Went up to see Jim Shaw, but found he was in hospital. Had quite a lot of trouble and a long walk but managed to get him eventually. I do not think he is very sick. Bought a box of oranges for three rubles. Had supper in the Middlesex canteen. Got back to the camp at 8 o'clock pretty well tired out having walked all the way to hospital and in all at least ten miles. Could not see much of the city as did not have time and one needed a guide anyway. Friday. Jan. 25. Nice clear frosty day again. Spent morning in the B.O.R. Nothing exciting happened but are not yet finding this place monotonous Sunday. Jan. 26. Ready for church parade at 9 a.m. but when orders were posted found our parade did not take place till 11:00 a.m. Paraded to Y.M.C.A. and heard Mass and sermon. French priest from 259 Bn. First time I heard Mass since Xmas eve in Vancouver. Toole went to B.O.R. in afternoon and 1 went for a walk. Worked or rather wrote letters in the orderly room till 8:30 when I came back and went to bed. Monday. Jan. 27. Back this morning but did not have many messages, wrote a couple of letters to kill time. Had a walk in the afternoon, nice cool day. 28
