Tuesday. Jan. 28. Went out and did some flag drill this morning in a large

barn to the real of our barracks. Had quite a hard morning. Did my turn at the office in the afternoon and went to bed

early.

Wednesday. Jan. 29.

Managed to get a second pass to town this morning. Todd, Mastin Trott and McLean came along and made up a party. Got to town about 1:00 p.m. Looked over the refugees in the station while passing through. They surely appear to be in a desperate condition, men women and children herded together covered with rags and as dirty as they possibly could be. Tried to find Jim at the Base HQ's, but could not. Saw most of the stores, but could not buy anything. Had lunch at the American Y.M.C.A. and dinner at the Middlesex canteen. Got to barracks about 9 o'clock, pretty well tired out.

Thursday. Jan. 30.

Another day like all the others. Did about an hours work in the kitchen in the morning. Loafed the rest of the fore noon. In the afternoon had some flag drill in the Y.M.C.A. room. This class was dismissed at 4 p.m. when a few of us went up to a Russian house with some washing. The people were very kind, made us stay to supper which consisted of cocoa with milk and sugar, and white bread without butter. The butter seems to be a rather expensive luxury. Even in the restaurants and hotels it is not served unless ordered and paid for extra. The girl of the house gave us some music on a stringed instrument she called the "balalaika". She then told our fortunes and when we decided to go home she and her brother showed us the way, bringing the music with her. The
