Tuesday, Feb. 4, 19. Same as yesterday, wrote a letter and tried to get some more done but failed. Will wait 'till Saturday p.m. holiday. Wednesday Feb. 5, 19. Worked a pass to town today though I had two already. Paddy, Foote, Mastin, Datir and I went. Had a drink of schnapps on the way to the station, and waited about an hour for the train. Could not see Jim Shaw as he is still in hospital, so went around best way we knew. One of the American MP's took us around late in the afternoon. Went through the Jap market's and the second hand Mongolian and Russian market back to the Jap places. Some of the stuff is new and useful but the greater part of it is worthless. Broken parts of old machinery, broken bicycles and sewing machines, old boxes of military buttons, old coins and in some places boxes of old badges, watches and rings. Generally, it is said they keep the old stuff as a blind, and have stolen goods of considerable value underneath, which will be produced only to the customer they know. Had supper at a restaurant with coffee royal to start with. Nice pork chops, and good bread and coffee. Butter we never see as it is too expensive 3 luxury for even Canadian soldier at $ 1.10 per. Went back on same old stuffy train, ignoring the conductor when he came to collect the tickets, as none of the fellows ever pay railway fare. They act like Members of Parliament at home. In the City though we get nothing for nothing and the fellows say that when a shopkeeper sees a soldier coming he tells his clerks to double the price of everything they buy. It appears that way to us as it seems outrageous the price they ask for some things. b) i\)
