am feeling pretty jake now. It has been a glorious day. The weather cleared although there is quite a sea running and we have enjoyed it immensely.
December 30th
Well Honey I skipped you last night. This is the fourth day out and we have covered 1/4 of the distance. There is not much to record except that we buried a poor chap at sea today. He was killed on deck while the ship was rolling. A huge case of ice and meat slewed and crushed him against a hatch. I was there and helped get him out. It was sickening. We have had a bad day. The ship right now is rolling fearfully. Just while I was writing the foregoing line I was spilled out of my chair. Many humorous things happen. Last night at dinner the chairs broke under two officers and they shot across the floor as though shot out of a gun. Still we are fairly contented. I am well.
Thursday, January 2nd Well we had New Year's on the Pacific and a wild day it was.
Tuesday evening we ran into a storm about dusk and we most assuredly had a shaking up that night. I simply could not get to sleep at all. The rolling and pitching was certainly bad. We lost one of the Chinese crew overboard—but of course no attention was paid to it. It quieted down towards morning and the afternoon was not really too bad. Today has been really fine. We should have seen the Aleutian Islands yesterday only the storm blew us out of our course and we are too far south. Tomorrow or Saturday we cross the 180th degree of longitude where we lose a day. Today has been really fine and there was more life about the ship than at any other time. But always the men are cheerful. It makes no difference what the weather is. Even on the first day when everyone was sick it was impossible to repress their good feelings.
Our good weather seems to have broken. It is blowing and raining tonight and the rain is coming in. I hope we are not in for more bad weather.
