Sunday, January 5th Though the date is the, 5th I have really missed only one day as
we dropped a day last night. Yesterday the weather cleared towards afternoon and was rather fine but today has been very blustery and during the last half hour we have run into a hurricane. It is snowing and the waves are breaking over the bow pretty constantly. We are now over half way and with good luck should be in Vladivostok a week from tomorrow or Tuesday. Our Russian is getting along fairly well though we have not had a class today at all. Things have been very quiet on
ship board....
Monday, Jan 6th. Our wild weather lasted for several hours last night and it
certainly was a dandy. I felt wretched and sick all evening with biliousness. All I ate were a couple of oranges. This morning I felt better and was able to eat but a kind of bilious feeling still hangs over me. The weather is getting cold and disagreeable on deck so one does not stay out long.
One certainly gets lots of time to think on a trip like this. We have been out now to days and have covered about 2500 miles. We expected to be in port in one week's time. There is a good deal of discontent about the accommodation we are getting. This is entirely a cargo boat and the few staterooms there are given up to the brigadier, the colonel and some of the staff. For the rest of the officers they have simply taken one hatchway and filled it with bunks. The whole space between decks is not more than 30 feet square in one case and about 20 in the other case where the senior officers are quartered. After the dining room is taken off there is very limited space left [for] bunks. Results-we are herded in like cattle. There is no deck space and to crown all there is a Chinese crew which does not add to the pleasure of life. Fortunately I have been well but for the poor chaps who have been under the weather it has been a severe ordeal. The food is not too bad if we only knew it was clean.
