Angelina wrote to a friend Katie in October of 1893. The card read, “A wish from a friend is often given/My wish for you is a home in heaven.” Following school in Middleton, Angelina went to live with her aunt in Kinkora while she was training to be a seamstress. Her aunt’s home was just across the road from the Keefes, and she and John met and fell in love. John was engaged to a Kelly girl, who was working, like many of her generation from Prince Edward Island, as a domestic in the Boston area to earn some money. When the Kelly girl returned, John broke off the engagement, and was promptly sued for breach of promise to marry. John borrowed $200 from a relative and neighbour John Smith, a hefty amount in those days (roughly equivalent to $5000 today) to settle the matter. The Kelly girl returned to Boston. John and Angelina were married at St. Malachy’ church on July 1, 1902. After a short honeymoon in Summerside, they returned to Kinkora to start their life together. 25
