the female students were seated on the opposite. Males crossed the floor where they would invite someone to dance always under the watchful eye of chaperons.

Students at Saint Dunstans also regularly cheered on their university’s hockey and football teams. Inter—varsity rivalries, especially involving competing teams from Prince of Wales College and Saint Francis Xavier University, were intense and spirited.

Classes were held five days a week and on Saturday mornings. On Saturday afternoons and on Sundays, Kathleen would join with a group of friends and go into town for a movie or for a snack at Miltons Old Spain restaurant, a favourite hangout for Saint Dunstans students who lived either on or off campus.

There was another attraction for Kathleen at Saint Dunstans. Bill Murphy, who had graduated from Kinkora, was now in his second year in the science program. He lived in residence at Dalton Hall, and would come across to the girl’s residence to visit Kathleen. They went for regular walks, met and talked often on campus, and would regularly join other students heading downtown on weekends. Some Saturday nights they would take in dances at the Holy Name Hall.

Most students were only able to return to their homes at Thanksgiving and at Christmas. In her first year, Kathleen went home to Kinkora for Thanksgiving. During Christmas of that year, she and her father took the train to Ottawa to visit her sister Mary and her brother Les. It was a joyous Christmas for the family members to be reunited, and they stayed for seven days. While in Ottawa, several of them went across to the Quebec side of the river to Hull. It was Kathleen’s first introduction to

a bar, and with Quebec’s laxer liquor laws, no one questioned the self— assured nineteen year old who confidently ordered a drink.

After her freshman year, Kathleen returned home to Kinkora to be with her father and brother Lennie. John was suffering from pleurisy and other ailments, and was no longer able to do much around the farm. Lennie was now looking after the farm and taking on increasing responsibilities.
